Pat Bartels
Owner
I am a business owner…
When I was younger, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. All I kept hearing was that if you go to college and get a degree, the job is yours. I paid for college by working the night shift at Seneca Foods and went to school during the day. It was challenging, and my parents’ financial situation disqualified me from receiving school loans or grants. I started taking business classes. I still had no idea what industry was right for me, but that degree taught me how to think, how to plan, and how to make sound financial decisions.
By this time, I was working the night shift driving a spotter truck to make it through school. I had no extra money and lived on Ramen noodle soup for weeks. While moving trailers in and out of dock doors, I started to see the needs of carriers, companies, and drivers. They were always talking about their need for equipment and storage. Always looking for creative ways to remedy the same old problem. So, I took a chance and dove in headfirst. I purchased four reefer trailers (once the bank finally agreed to give me the loan). I repaired the trailers and offered them to customers as an on-site storage option. Soon, they needed more trailers, and I ended up renting from another company to meet the need. Every cent of profit was reinvested in this new trailer rental endeavor.
Two years into the trailer rental business, I watched a warehouse in my hometown close. The building was being sold in foreclosure. I knew nothing about the warehousing business, had no customers or contracts, but saw this as an opportunity to potentially address the storage needs of my current customers. I chose to convert it refrigerated storage, and soon I had my first customer, followed by my second, and then my third.
All of a sudden, I was driving a forklift, managing storage contracts, obtaining organic certifications, overseeing inventory, handling invoicing, and soliciting friends to help me. I was single, working fourteen hour days, and had no idea what I would be doing from one day to the next. My head was spinning! My friends, who are now makeshift employees, invited me over to from time to time for barbecues or bonfires. I rarely went, but in 2010, I attended a birthday party at their house and met Amy. Over the next year, she and I ran into each other at a few more events and she started to help me with the business and its constant demands.
Meanwhile, a building was being constructed in Gaylord on land that already featured a diesel fuel island and a state-certified scale. I bought the shell of a building and turned it into Minnesota 19 Truck Wash & Repair and after 10 years in business, we opened a second location.
It may sound glorious, fun, or maybe like the “easy life” to be a business owner, but the truth is owning a business is non stop work and I could never do it without Amy and our team. We consider ourselves truly blessed to have such a fantastic group of people around us every day. Being open 24 hours a day, even on holidays, is a beast for any team, but they do it well. Our people sincerely care about they work they do and the carriers they serve. To us, it’s simple: we want to do what’s right and take care of people’s needs. Rome wasn’t built in a day; we are still making changes, but we pledge to continue working hard to make that happen.
